Okartek’s new factory starts up in Kaarina – modern production facility responds to the demands of growth and sustainability

Okartek, a contract manufacturer of plastic products, will start operating its new state-of-the-art factory in Raadelma, Kaarina, this summer. The new plant will enable significant capacity growth and the deployment of new machines as well as more energy-efficient and sustainable production. At the same time, its location by the motorway improves logistical accessibility, especially with regard to smooth customer deliveries.

Significant investment in the future

The factory project was implemented in cooperation with TKU Rakennus, Arkkitehtiruutu, Rakennuttajatoimisto HTJ and Okartek’s own work community.

  • In addition to the above, a vast number of experts were also involved in the project. “Thanks to seamless cooperation, we were able to design a state-of-the-art factory,” says Pasi Heinonen, Production Director at Okartek.
  • “This is a monumental step towards our next growth phase. The new plant will enable us to deploy the 2400T machine, for example, to manufacture more demanding and larger parts for our customers,” says Sami Varjonen, Sales Director at Okartek.

More for customers – and faster

The focus of the plant’s design was on both technical performance and the smoothness of day-to-day operations. In-house logistics were completely overhauled – the material flow is now clearer, and there is less need to move things around unnecessarily. The new centralised raw-material transport and drying system and electric forklifts will significantly improve production efficiency. The material flow has been designed to be smoother when compared to the old one, and the need for unnecessary moves has been minimised.

Customers benefit from these solutions in terms of improved delivery reliability, more consistent production quality and faster delivery times, among other things. Even larger and more technically demanding parts can now be produced more efficiently. The new systems in the modern production facility ensure cleaner production facilities and a more consistent production environment.

The transfer of production to the new factory is scheduled to take place between July 1–28. After the summer holidays, the entire organisation will be ready for the next phase.

  • “The transition may cause temporary congestion in our customer service, but major interruptions are not expected,” says Varjonen.

Responsibly towards carbon neutrality

The factory supports Okartek’s environmental goals in concrete terms. A solar power plant covering the entire roof of the plant produces a large proportion of the energy used, and the waste heat recovered from the processes heats the entire property and logistics warehouses. The plant operates completely without fuel oil.

  • “We can recover heat from the new process water cooling system. The waste heat from the process is used to heat the entire property and logistics storage facilities. This means that we can utilise all the energy from the solar power plant in our own production,” Heinonen says.

“We are committed to the SBTi climate targets, and our new factory is a major step towards carbon-neutral production. We are a modern and responsible partner that wants to grow together with its customers,” says Varjonen.

Everything from the old plant that was suited to the purpose was incorporated into the new one – responsibly and carefully. At the same time, everything that was built new was made in accordance with Okartek’s fresh brand image.

This combination of sustainable thinking and renewal sums up Okartek’s direction: to strengthen its position as the most professional, attractive and responsible partner in its industry.
